INDIANAPOLIS — A bill being proposed at the Statehouse would put an age restriction on energy drinks.

Senate Bill 369, written by Sen. Ron Alting (R-District 22) would make it illegal to sell, give, or distribute an energy drink to anyone under the age of 18.

Anyone caught breaking the law would be charged with a Class C misdemeanor.

Sen. Alting’s bill was introduced Jan. 10 and referred to the committee on rules and legislative procedure.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says 50-percent of American kids and teenagers have reported drinking energy drinks. The CDC says stimulants in the drinks can temporarily improve alertness and attention, but can also be harmful to the nervous system.

If the bill is signed into law, it would go into effect July 1.
