INDIANAPOLIS–A federal investigation has been started into the incident on Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis, where a man named Jermaine Vaughn was kicked in the head by an Indianapolis Metro Police officer.
The department announced Tuesday that state charges were filed against Sgt. Eric Huxley, who can be seen on bady cam footage giving Vaughn a kick in the head as he law on the ground in handcuffs, subdued by two other officers. Huxley faces battery and misconduct charges.
The incident happened Sept. 24. IMPD Chief Randal Taylor ordered the state investigation and internal affairs investigation when he became aware of the incident Oct. 6.
“The United States Attorney’s Office is aware of the incident involving an IMPD officer and Jermaine Vaughn. Our office and the FBI have opened an investigation, and if the investigation reveals prosecutable violations of any federal criminal statutes, the Department will take appropriate action,” said Acting U.S. Attorney John E. Childress.
The three officers involved are white. Vaughn is Black. But, Chief Taylor said he did not hear any racial epithets on the videos.
