(FISHERS, Ind.) – After a trial run in Indianapolis this summer, a self-driving car service is coming to Fishers.
The five-month pilot project begins December 20 and will continue into May. You’ll be able to use an app to request the free service, or wait at a designated stop along a three-mile loop through Fishers’ NIckel Plate District.
Mayor Scott Fadness says it’s not so much the technology being tested as the business model. After trying out the autonomous hybrid Lexuses in downtown Indy, including the campus of IUPUI, May Mobility wants to test what the demand might be in a suburban environment instead of an urban one.
The fleet of six vehicles includes one wheelchair-accessible all-electric Polaris.
Fadness says he’s not concerned about the vehicles’ safety. While the cars drive themselves, there’s a human being in the car who can take control if a problem arises.
Fadness says it’s an opportunity for Fishers to showcase itself as a hub for innovation.
