FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Former Indiana congressman Mark Souder has died. Souder had been battling pancreatic cancer for the last few months.

He was Indiana’s representative from the 3rd and 4th districts in northern Indiana from 1995 to 2010. He was elected in the mid-1990s as part of Republicans’ “Contract with America” campaign that saw the GOP win control of Congress.

During his time in Congress, Souder was described as an “independent thinker.” He was one of very few Republicans who voted against all three of the articles of impeachment against then-President Bill Clinton in 1997.

“No president is above the law,” Souder said of the proceedings. “He should, and will be prosecuted. But, as of now, I reluctantly remain unconvinced that it meets the constitutional standard of impeachment.”

Souder was also among Republicans to try to oust House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Souder was a big fan of baseball and in the early 2000s took a vested interest in a Congressional investigation into the steroid scandal that shook Major League Baseball to its core.

Souder would end up resigning from his seat in 2010 after admitting to having a relationship with a female staffer of his. During his resignation press conference, he walked out after giving his statement without taking any questions.

He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer back and January. It’s not clear yet when funeral services for Souder will be.
