INDIANAPOLIS–Five civilians and one firefighter were injured in a fire where there was also an explosion at a home on the west side of Indianapolis Friday morning.

Flames could be seen by neighbors coming out of a home in the 500 block of North Rybolt Avenue just before 8:30 am. That is near the intersection of West Michigan Street and Holt Road. It is also not far from Thatcher Golf Course.

“We were called about a residence fire that was then upgraded to a residence explosion. It then became a working incident,” said Eric Banister, public information officer with Wayne Township Fire Department.

“Four civilians and one firefighter had to be transported to hospitals. Another injured person said they didn’t need to be transported. The first arriving firefighters found that the house was not standing on its frame. It had been knocked over to the north and west side. It was clear the structure was not intact and was indicative of an explosion,” said Banister.

Firefighters are trying to figure out what caused the fire and the explosion. Banister says gas companies are assisting in the investigation.
