INDIANAPOLIS — Authorities were on the scene Thursday of a massive tanker fire that temporarily shut down I-465 and I-70 on the city’s east side.

According to Indianapolis Fire Dept. Battalion Chief Rita Reith, around 2 p.m., a tanker carrying 4,000 gallons of jet fuel overturned on the ramp from I-465 south to I-70 east.

Reith says the driver was able to get out of the semi before the explosion, but was injured and was helped down the embankment from two bystanders. He is in critical condition at Eskenazi Hospital.

IFD had to use nearly 10,000 gallons of water, and call for backup, to put the fire out. All lanes of I-465 and I-70 were back open by 5:30 p.m., but the ramp from 465 South to 70 East remained closed Thursday evening.
