INDIANAPOLIS — If you’re looking for a way to have fun — and give back — on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, you can’t go wrong with a trip to the Indianapolis Zoo.

Zoo admission and parking are free on Monday, Jan. 17 with a food or monetary donation.

Donated food will benefit The Exchange at the Indianapolis Urban League, while monetary donations will go toward Gleaner’s Food Bank.

The zoo is usually closed on Mondays but it is opening its gates for people to enjoy a special visit to the zoo while helping the community.

The weather will be chilly, but the zoo says visitors can expect to see hardier animals out on exhibit, including the Arctic fox, walrus, tigers, and brown bears. Indoor exhibits such as the Desert Dome, Dolphin Dome, Oceans, and Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center, will also be open.

Zoo visitors can also enjoy a special $5 combo meal that includes a hot dog, chips, and a drink at the  Café on the Commons.

The Indianapolis Zoo will be open Monday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
