MARTINSVILLE, Ind. — Interstate 69 is opening up in Martinsville after a year of construction work that has caused traffic headaches in the Morgan County city.

INDOT Commissioner Joe McGuinness says the northbound lanes of the 17-mile stretch of interstate will be opening up today all the way up to State Road 44. The southbound lanes will be opening in the coming days.

“Work has just started,” McGuinness said. “It is not completed from Morgan County up to Marion County, so we ask that you continue to travel safely through this corridor.”

Governor Eric Holcomb says we are in the home stretch now of connecting Evansville directly with Indianapolis.

“We are here on schedule, and we are keeping this project on schedule, in fact, three years early by the time we pass through the finish line,” Holcomb said. “This was the missing crown jewel in our infrastructure, not just our roads and bridges portfolio, but our entire infrastructure program.”

The next phase is the final phase, which will convert most of State Road 37 into interstate grade highway through Johnson County. It will eventually connect to I-465 in Marion County sometime in 2024.
