INDIANAPOLIS — A police officer is on administrative leave after a police chase ended with the officer shooting and killing a suspect.

According to Indianapolis Metro Police, Deputy Chief Kendale Adams and Chief Randall Taylor were driving home in their unmarked police cruisers when the noticed a car driving erratically and breaking several traffic laws on the interstate at speeds upwards of 90 mph.

Deputy Chief Chris Bailey said they “terminated the chase” not long afterward once other officers were able to come and take over. Officers then noticed the car pull behind a building along Michigan Road near 62nd Street.

“The officers got out of the car and the suspect took off on foot,” Bailey said. “The foot chase ended after a short distance. Shots were fired. It’s believed at this time that shots were fired by both the officer and the suspect; the suspect firing at the officer with the officer returning fire.”

Bailey said before shots were fired the officer deployed his taser to try and subdue the suspect, a black man in his early 20’s. The officer is also black.

“IMPD closely scrutinizes all uses of force, as we hold every officer to our high standards,” the department said in am emailed statement. “While we are withholding judgment on the actions of the involved officer at this time, the officer has been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation.”

The shooting is being investigated and detectives haven’t said anything more about what led up the shooting. However, it was recorded on Facebook Live.

The video records audio of an officer standing near Reed’s body saying “looks like it’ll be a closed casket, homie.” That statement has many outraged on social media, accusing the officer of making light of Reed’s death.
