INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Public Library is abandoning fines for late library items.

The library has also waived unpaid late fees for over 87,000 library patrons.

The library said materials will still need to be either returned or renewed within 21 days of checkout. But, if you’re a little late getting the items back to the library, you won’t get charged each day for being overdue. If a library item is overdue for too long, the library will consider it “lost” and you will be charged a replacement fee.

The Indy Public Library Board of Trustees approved ending late fines in April 2020 to avoid adding financial hardship for people.

“If you have been hesitant to use the library for fear of getting late fines or because you owed late fines, those concerns should no longer stand in your way. We have so much for our community to enjoy,” said Jackie Nytes, Indianapolis Public Library CEO.
