INDIANAPOLIS— A mother of four will become the first African-American woman to serve as postmaster of Indianapolis.

The Postal Service made that announcement Thursday.

Christi Johnson-Kennedy started working with the Postal Service 18 years ago as a mail handler in the Indianapolis processing and distribution center.

She eventually became a letter carrier and later moved into management jobs at several city stations.

In 2015, she was promoted as Postmaster of Greenwood and returned to Indianapolis the following year to serve as Manager, Customer Service Operations.

Christi Johnson-Kennedy will be granted the position at 11 a.m. Friday at the Skyline Club on the 36th floor of The OneAmerica Tower.
