(INDIANAPOLIS) — Indiana has picked the route for a planned new toll bridge into Kentucky from
Evansville.
Indiana’s been choosing among five possible routes to connect the bridge to I-69, including upgrading
or replacing the U.S. 41 bridge. Instead, INDOT spokesman Scott Manning says that bridge will
remain, while the two states join forces to build a new one. He says that’ll create an interstate-
quality route across the river, further extending I-69, while leaving a non-toll option for local traffic.
The bridge will connect to I-69 from southeast of downtown Evansville.
The decision on the route means Indiana and Kentucky can prepare an environmental impact
statement and seek final federal approval. Construction won’t begin until after the expected
completion of the final leg of the I-69 extension in three years, connecting Martinsville to Indianapolis.
The estimated cost of the project is $1.5 billion. Manning says it’s expected to take
two or three years to complete once construction starts.
