(INDIANAPOLIS) — Marion County is adding nearly 170 polling places for the November election.

The June primary reduced the number of vote centers from 273 to 22. Even with half the voters casting absentee ballots, some polling places had lines which stretched for hours.

There will be more than eight times as many vote centers in November. Marion County clerk’s spokesman Russell Hollis says adding locations will shorten lines and make social distancing easier.

The new vote centers include Lucas Oil Stadium and Bankers Life Fieldhouse, as well as Butler’s Hinkle Fieldhouse, which has been a polling place before. Hollis says the large arenas will make it easier to keep voters distanced from each other, but says while the exact number of voting machines hasn’t been determined, Indy won’t follow the example of Louisville, which conducted its entire primary in the Kentucky Exposition Center. Hollis says the Indy arenas will be regular polling places, not megasites.

Hollis says the county still needs about 100 more pollworkers, but says with 1,900 already recruited, the county is far ahead of where it usually is two monthws before Election Day.

43 of Indiana’s 92 counties will use vote centers in November.

Marion County will begin early voting October 6 at the City-County Building. Five satellite locations will open for early voting October 24, which is also the first of two weekends where early voting will be available.
