UPDATE as of 11 a.m.: The FBI is involved in the search of the shooter’s home, though police say they have not ID’d the shooter. Police still have not speculated on a motive, saying it would be premature at only 12 hours from the shooting. Neith IMPD nor the FBI have said what kind of weapon was used.

UPDATE: Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett has released a statement about the FedEx mass shooting:

“This morning, Indianapolis residents are confronted with the horrific news of yet another mass shooting, an act of violence that senselessly claimed the lives of eight of our neighbors. As law enforcement works to learn more about this tragedy, our prayers are with the families of those whose lives were cut short.

Thank you to all of our city’s first responders for their tireless work overnight. Their quick response provided critical aid to those injured in the shooting and brought a measure of calm to an otherwise chaotic scene.”

The FBI is now assisting IMPD in the investigation.

INDIANAPOLIS–Multiple people were shot at the FedEx facility at the Indianapolis International Airport, said Indianapolis Metro Police.

Eight people were found dead by police, not including the shooter.

The calls came in, beginning at 11:10. Just before midnight, Indiana State Police Tweeted that I-70 in both directions at the facility was closed. It has since reopened.

“As officers arrived, they came in contact with an active shooter incident,” said IMPD spokesperson Genae Cook. “Preliminary information at the time is that the shooter has taken his own life. We don’t feel that there is an active threat to the community at this time.”

Cook asked people who had family who work at FedEx, and who could not be contacted, to come to the Holiday Inn Express at 8555 Stanstead Dr.

“IMPD’s chaplain’s office, along with several others, will be at that location to assist.”

Our newsgathering partners at WISH-TV spoke to a witness who said a man had a submachine gun, firing it in the open. IMPD did not speak about specifics of the shooting at their 1:15 a.m. news conference.
