STATE WIDE--A new strain of coronavirus, which was first identified in the United Kingdom in the fall, has been confirmed in Indiana. A news release from the Indiana Dept. of Health, said the strain does not cause more severe infections, but it is spread easier.

“It’s common for viruses to mutate, and we are seeing that occur with COVID-19,” said State Health Commissioner Kris Box. “Because this strain of the virus can be transmitted more easily, it’s more important than ever that Hoosiers continue to wear their masks, practice social distancing, maintain good hygiene and get vaccinated when they are eligible.”

The release said 8,643 people in Indiana have died from coronavirus. More than 560,000 Hoosiers have been confirmed to have tested positive for the virus. That’s 30 more deaths since Sunday.

More than half of the state’s deaths have been in nursing homes.
