INDIANAPOLIS–Some of the snow likely to fall across Indiana Friday could be heavy at times, says the National Weather Service in Indianapolis.

“We expect scattered snow to develop, especially as we get into the mid-day hours and onward,” said Joe Nield, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis. “We could see some fairly intense snow showers, even some snow squalls.”

A snow squall is a sudden moderate to heavy snowfall that can bring blowing snow and strong, gusty surface winds.

“Basically the entire central Indiana area is under threat for these snow showers. We could see some light accumulations as a result of them, but it’s probably not going to be very consistent from spot to spot,” said Nield. “One area may get intense snow showers or squalls and then you may go down the road and there may be very little snow.”

Nield said the entire state will likely see snow showers at some point Friday.

“Watch out for areas where the visibility drops very quickly and where the snowfall rates pick up. You’ve got potential for roads to become slick in spots as that snowfall accumulates on roadways,” said Nield. “You can see situations like this where you could have chain-reaction crashes, especially on interstates.”

As for the weekend, Nield said many areas across Indiana will get light snow periodically both Saturday and Sunday. Any of that snow will be lighter than what falls Friday.

“Then we’ll start off the work week dry, but then it’s the Tuesday through Thursday timeframe where we may see some additional precipitation. It’s nothing that looks particularly impactful at this moment,” said Nield.
