STATEWIDE–Slightly above-average temperatures for October will continue until the middle of the week before a cold front moves through.

“Highs will be in the upper 60s to lower 70s. Then a cold front moves through Wednesday night and highs will be around 60 by the end of the week with a warm-up by early next week. We could see lows in the upper 30s for parts of central Indiana,” said Chad Swain, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis.

For this time of year, the average high temperature is around 65 degrees. Despite a cooldown in Indianapolis this past weekend, the first half of this October has been the second warmest to date (average temperature was 67.6 degrees). The warmest was when the average was 73.6 degrees in October of 1879.

“A few thunderstorms are also possible on Wednesday night, but no severe thunderstorms are expected,” said Swain.

The National Weather Service in Northern Indiana predicts that a weather system will bring a chance of showers late Wednesday into Thursday.

The National Weather Service says a small tornado touched down in southern Indiana during Friday night’s storms. It was an EF-1 tornado in Spencer County that knocked a barn off its foundation but didn’t injure anyone. It had top wind speeds of about 90 miles per hour.

The NWS also reports a pair of EF-0 tornadoes touched down in New Pekin and southwest of Lexington, Indiana Friday night. They both caused minor damage, but no one was hurt.
