FALLS CHURCH, Virginia–Former Vice President Mike Pence is recovering from surgery after getting a pacemaker. Pence’s office announced a pacemaker was implanted after he started experiencing a slow heart rate.

The procedure was conducted at a Fairfax Medical Campus in Northern Virginia and Pence’s office says a full recovery is expected. Pence is 61. He was previously diagnosed with a heart condition known as an “asymptomatic left bundle branch block.”

The condition is a malfunction that causes a lag or interruption of the electrical signal that regulates heartbeat.

“I am grateful for the swift professionalism and care of the outstanding doctors, nurses and staff at Inova Heart and Vascular Institute, including Dr. Brett Atwater and Dr. Behnam Tehrani,” said Pence in a prepared statement.
