RANDOLPH COUNTY, Ind. — A woman from Randolph County faces animal cruelty charges after five horses and a pony were removed from her property in Union City.

The animals were described as “severely emaciated” when they were taken away from 39-year-old Samantha Boyd on Nov. 17.

The horses and pony were so underfed that their ribs and hipbones were showing. Union City’s animal control officer noted that the animals were kept in the same small pen, which was filled with pieces of broken wood and metal, according to The Star Press newspaper.

The animals are now in the care of the Winchester/Randolph County Animal Shelter and are recovering.

Boyd is charged with one count of cruelty to an animal, a misdemeanor carrying up to one year in jail. She is due in court Dec. 22.
