WASHINGTON — A man from Shelbyville, Indiana has been arrested for carrying a loaded gun on Capitol grounds, and assaulting a police officer during the Jan. 6 insurrection.

Mark Andrew Mazza, 56, is charged with illegal possession of a firearm on Capitol grounds, civil disorder, and assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers with a dangerous weapon — as well as other charges.

Mazza was arrested on Nov. 17, 2021 at his home in Shelbyville.

Court documents say Mazza brought a Taurus revolver, loaded with three shotgun shells and two hollow point bullets, to the Capitol. The gun was found in the West Front Terrace area after 2:30 p.m.

Video footage later shows Mazza in the crowd, entering the tunnel to the Lower West Terrace doors at 3:08 p.m. Once the glass doors to the Capitol were beached, Mazza held the doors open to allow rioters into the building.

While holding a baton, he helped the group push toward officers, who were defending the area. He actively swung the baton at police, at one point yelling, “This is our f—— house! We own this house!”

On Jan. 8, 2021, court documents say Mazza filed a false police report in Indiana, where he claimed to have lost his gun in an Ohio casino.

In total, Mazza is charged with:

  • Obstructing any official proceeding.
  • Knowingly enter or remain in any restricted building or grounds; knowingly, and with intent to impede or disrupt the orderly conduct of government business; and engage in physical violence, all while carrying a deadly or dangerous weapon.
  • Obstructing law enforcement officer during a civil disorder.
  • Carry, or have readily available, a firearm on Capitol grounds; utter loud, threatening or abusive language, or engage in disorderly or disruptive conduct; and engage in acts of physical violence.
  • Possess a pistol, firearm or ammunition outside their home or place of business, in D.C., without a license and registration.

So far, more than 675 people have been arrested for the breach of the U.S. Capitol.
