TERRE HAUTE, Ind.–Some Indiana State University students have concerns about the racial climate at the university and would like to see some things change.

Unity Council ISU started a petition with a list of demands on change.org. The author of the petition, Nijah Smith, says black students have faced racism both in classrooms and when working on campus.

Smith said the university could be better at supporting students of color.

The petition, in part, says the following:

We are in a time where change is inevitable and necessary. African American students are still trying to find their place on campus. Again, as a collective of concerned students on campus, we are coming to you with a list of demands that are long overdue and are necessary for the success of African American students at Indiana State University.

Later in the petition, a list of demands is given. Some of those demands include:

-More hiring of Black administrators, faculty, and staff

-Increased funding and resources for the African-American Cultural Center

-Greater accountability and consequences for employees “accused and proven to be racist or white supremacists”

-Cultural awareness training for new hires.

You can see the full petition with a link to the rest of the demands here.

University leaders have been in contact with the group.
