INDIANAPOLIS–Some people who were arrested over the weekend won’t face any long-term trouble. Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears announced Monday that 41 people who were arrested on charges related to peaceful protests would not be prosecuted.

“We will not file criminal charges against those who came downtown to stand against injustice and make their voices heard through peaceful demonstrations,” said Mears. “For us, the unfortunate choices by a few will not dilute the critical message carried by the majority.”

He said the arrests were reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

IMPD reported 115 arrests over the weekend. Eighty-three of those people were from Indianapolis.

Some people who cops say they caught illegally entering businesses and removing items resulted in 14 individuals charged with burglary, which is a level five felony.

Rioting is a misdemenaor in Indiana, with a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $5,000 fine.

Any accusations of improper conduct or procedural violations by members of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department should be directed to the Citizens’ Police Complaint Office, said Mears.
