NILES, Mich.–A South Bend youth hockey coach will serve jail time because police say he tried to have sex with a 15-year-old girl at a hotel in Michigan.

Christen Joubert worked at The Ice Box and has also coached youth hockey players for 18 years. Joubert was arrested in May for trying to meet the girl at a hotel in Niles, but the girl was actually an undercover officer working as part of a sting operation for the Berrien and Genesee county sheriff’s departments. The police had used an advertisement on a dating website that promised sex acts in exchange for money.

Officers told Joubert to bring $80 for the “sexual favors” and asked for some soda. Police say Joubert went to the hotel room with the soda and they arrested him.

On Monday, Joubert was sentenced to 60 days in the Berrien County Jail followed by five years of probation. He also has to register as a sex offender for 25 years. In court, Joubert apologized to his wife, his children, and to all of the hockey players he coached over the years.

Before he was arrested, Joubert was involved with a couple of youth hockey organizations in South Bend and ran a travel league team. He was fired from the Ice Box shortly after he was arrested and relieved of all coaching duties.

Joubert says he has been getting psychological treatment since the incident.
