INDIANAPOLIS — It appears an organization geared to providing bail towards helping jail inmates come up with bail money provided bail to three men who ended up being arrested for murder or attempted murder in Indianapolis this year.

The Bail Project gave Deonta Williams $750 to make bail and get out of jail earlier this year. He was released with an ankle monitor after being arrested for burglary. Williams is the man who is accused of stabbing two police officers this week.

The Bail Project also bailed out Travis Lang and Marcus Garvin — both of whom would later be arrested for separate murders.

Lang was arrested for murder in October for a shooting that killed a man and injured a woman. The Bail Project paid for his release from jail on bond in a case where he was facing drug charges.

Garvin cut off his ankle monitor and is accused of murdering his girlfriend back in July. Garvin was originally in jail for a stabbing incident in a gas station bathroom in December of 2020. The Bail Project also covered the bail money for his release.

The city of Indianapolis has given funding to the Bail Project in the past. The city released the following statement on behalf of the Indianapolis Officer of Public Safety this week:

“Using a competitive grant process, funding was awarded to The Bail Project exclusively for operations and services such as assessing client needs, arranging transportation and connecting individuals with wrap-around services. City dollars have never gone towards paying direct cash bail for any individuals. The city is committed to identifying and correcting gaps in the criminal justice system that permit cycles of violence to continue.”
