INDIANAPOLIS – Twelve people escaped an apartment fire Monday morning, according to the Indianapolis Fire Department.

Firefighters were called to a building at 215 E. 36th Street just before 7 a.m.

All twelve people living in the building were able to escape. One man was slightly injured after using a hot space heater to break out a window. He was taken to Eskenazi Hospital to be checked out, according to IFD.

IFD said the fire started in the kitchen of a first-floor apartment while a woman and her three children were asleep; all four people were able to escape. The exact cause of the fire is unknown.
