SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Two people who were hit and killed by a car early Saturday morning were Notre Dame students.
Police say the incident happened just after 4 a.m. on Ironwood Road near State Road 23. The car ran over the group of people, then continued down the road and crashed into a house. The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with police.
In a letter to Notre Dame students, President Rev. John Jenkins confirmed the two people that died were freshmen. They’ve been identified as Valeria Espinel and Olivia Lara Rojas.
A third person, a sophomore, was taken to the hospital. He remains in critical condition.
Police are still investigating what caused the crash.
