INDIANAPOLIS — Two Indy Metro Police officers were stabbed by a man on the north side of Indianapolis overnight.

According to Deputy Chief Chris Bailey with Indy Metro Police, officers got a 911 call to a home along Fairfield Avenue near the intersection of 38th and Fall Creek. Bailey says they were met there by a man, identified Wednesday afternoon as Deonta Williams, 20.

“Officers came into contact with an adult male who reported that another individual was harassing him somewhere down the street,” Bailey said. “As the officers turned (away), the man who turned out to be the suspect, stabbed both officers.”

A broken knife police say was found on the ground. They believe it may have been used to stab one of the officers.

One officer was stabbed in the neck and the other was stabbed in the chest, says Bailey.

“The officers then gave verbal commands and discharged their weapons when the suspect failed to listen to their commands,” he added. “From what I have seen on the body-worn camera video, it was unprovoked.”

Bailey said that the man who met the officers and then stabbed them is the same man who made the initial 911 call. Bailey stopped short of calling it a planned ambush of police officers saying that they still have much to investigate.

One of the knives police believe was used in the stabbing was photographed on the ground.

Both officers were taken to Eskenazi Health for treatment. One was expected to be released Wednesday. The was in surgery Wednesday morning and was expected to be in the hospital for a couple of days. The suspect was taken to IU Health Methodist where he is stable after being shot.

“A separate administrative investigation is being conducted by IMPD Internal Affairs. The officers who fired their guns have been placed on administrative leave as is standard procedure in an officer involved shooting investigation,” said a Facebook post from IMPD.
“The civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will conduct a mandatory hearing for any use of deadly force against a person. This occurs after the conclusion of the criminal process.”
