VALPARAISO, Ind. — 200 workers have been furloughed at Valparaiso University as the school reduces operations because of the coronavirus.

The furloughs are for 154 full-time employees and another 46 part-timers. The Northwest Indiana Times reports, that for those who are not furloughed but are making more than $48,000 a year will see a temporary cut in their pay. Those cuts vary based on salary.

President Mark Heckler is volunteering to take a 30-percent cut in his own pay. Heckler says he expects the furloughs to last through the end of July.

The school first suspended in-person learning in mid-March when the first reports of people infected with coronavirus in Indiana came in.
