(INDIANAPOLIS) — Cleanup is underway in downtown Indianapolis after two days of riots and a tense third day.

Downtown Indy Inc. says 112 businesses were damaged or looted over the weekend in violence sparked by the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police. Downtown Indy Inc. president Sherry Seiwert says she doesn’t have a full damage estimate yet, but says one big office building puts the cost of replacing its smashed windows at a half-million dollars.

City-County Council president Vop Osili brought in more than 30 members of a Christian youth group on Monday to help business owners clean up graffiti. Seiwert says the graffiti looks worse than it actually is, because a lot of it ended up on the plywood which businesses had installed to cover broken windows or prevent further damage.

A Sunday night curfew sharply reduced the violence downtown, but Seiwert acknowledges there’s no guarantee there won’t be a fresh round of looting and vandalism to come. She says Monday’s cleanup effort represents an expression of hope, and an opportunity for business owners to try to do something positive for downtown.

Seiwert says some stores or restaurants could close for good from the one-two punch of the violence and the coronavirus pandemic. She says the virus remains a greater long-term risk. While insurance may fix broken windows, businesses can’t really bounce back until the conventions and nightlife feel able to return safely.
