(INDIANAPOLIS) – Indiana high school and college students and professional software developers are going head-to-head at Butler this weekend in a sports-themed hackathon.

30-to-50 teams will have 48 hours to come up with a high-tech way to assist stadium security, aid stadium operations through the Internet, or give fans a new way to enjoy the game. The best ideas will split $100,000, including a $20,000 grand prize.

It’s the fifth year for the AT&T-sponsored hackathon, and the first since 2019 after a pandemic cancellation last year. AT&T Indiana president Bill Soards says it’s a showcase for the company’s 5G network, and a chance for software companies to get an early look at up-and-coming talent.

None of the past years’ winners has reached the market yet, but Soards says a couple are in the development pipeline and trying to build toward a launch.
