STATEWIDE–Indiana State Police and the Drug Enforcement Administration have partnered up for the 21st “Prescription Drug Take Back” initiative on Saturday.
In case you are wondering what happens to your unwanted prescription drugs, state police say they want to put your mind at ease.
“We keep them. We lock them up. They are secure at our facilities. From there, we turn them over to the Drug Enforcement Administration and allow them to safely dispose of them. They’ve got a system by which they dispose of them,” said Ron Galaviz, captain with Indiana State Police.
The DEA often incinerates the drugs, but where and how they do that varies. Before officers decide on which drugs to incinerate, they have to make sure burning the drugs will not have a negative impact on the environment.
The DEA can also only destroy drugs in incinerators approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
“Take a few minutes. Clean out those purses, medicine cabinets, etc, of any unwanted prescription medication. Bring those to us for safe disposal,” said Galaviz.
The “Prescription Drug Take Back Day” runs from 10 am-2 pm Saturday. You can drop off any of your unused or unwanted prescription drugs at any Indiana State Police Post, except for the Toll Road Post.
