INDIANAPOLIS — A woman is in serious condition after a car fire and explosion on Indy’s near east side, according to the Indianapolis Fire Department.

Fire crews were called to the scene of a crash and fire near 26th and Lasalle Streets at around 8 a.m. Tuesday.

According to IFD, a car crash ignited some welding or metalworking equipment in the back of the woman’s car.

Police told WISH-TV’s Kevin Ratermann that the woman hit a car near Adams Street, the equipment caught fire and possibly exploded, and the car came to a stop at Lasalle Street.

The woman was cut out of her car by firefighters. She was taken to the hospital in serious but stable condition, according to WISH-TV.

Police are working with the arson investigators and the bomb squad to determine if the explosion was accidental or intentional, according to Ratermann.
