(WASHINGTON, D.C.) — Indiana Senator Todd Young will run for a second term next year.
Young’s reelection bid is no surprise, but he made it official in a five-minute YouTube video
emphasizing his support for former President Donald Trump. He says he’s proud of his votes for a
border wall, the 2017 tax cut, and a raft of judicial nominees, including Indiana’s Amy Coney
Barrett and two other Supreme Court justices.
Young says his top priority in a second term would be to get things back to normal after the
pandemic, and “rebuild, not remake” the economy. And he promises to fight any attempt at
amnesty for illegal immigrants, and what he charges is President Biden’s plan to weaken border
protections.
Young revisited key Republican talking points from last year’s campaign, lamenting an
atmosphere in which police are “mocked and ridiculed and attacked,” and blasting “foreign
regimes like the Chinese Communists who steal our technology, steal our intellectual property,
and steal our jobs.”
Young’s campaign says he’s already locked up the endorsements of the rest of Indiana’s
Republican congressional delegation, all but four Republican state legislators and all but seven
county party chairs.
Young beat former Democratic Senator Evan Bayh by 10 points in 2016. Gary civil rights attorney
Haneefah Khaaliq is the only Democrat to announce her candidacy so far.
Indiana Democratic Party spokesman Drew Anderson labeled Young a “yes man” for national
Republicans, and charges his vote to acquit Trump at last month’s impeachment trial over the
January 6 Capitol riots shows he “has lost his morals.”
