5 Years for Muncie Banker Who Stole From Elderly Customers

Diane Bizzel told a judge she started stealing from clients at First Merchants Bank after she became addicted to gambling.

MUNCIE, Ind. -- A former banker from Muncie will spend five years behind bars for stealing from elderly customers.

Diane Bizzel, 65,  pleaded guilty in August to 14 felonies, including theft, identity deception and check fraud. She was accused of stealing money from customers at First Merchants Bank between May 2010 and August 2014.

She told a judge that she started stealing from clients at First Merchants Bank after she became addicted to the slot machines at Hoosier Park casino.

"I’m truly sorry for what I did, to the bank and the customers," Bizzell said. “I just got caught up in that durned gambling."

First Merchants says her sticky fingers cost them nearly half-a-million dollars to investigate the theft and replenish victims' bank accounts, according to The Muncie Star-Press.

Bizzell will spend five years on probation after her release.
