Another Option: The Senate Now Has a Tax Reform Bill

Senators Donnelly and Young have a chance to take action in their chamber.

WASHINGTON, D.C.--A new tax reform bill has been proposed in the Senate, which may have several difference with the House bill that Vice-President Mike Pence was pushing in Indiana Thursday. Both Hoosier senators are looking at it.

“As I have said, tax reform should create jobs, protect jobs, invest in American workers, and benefit middle class families," said Sen. Joe Donnelly, a Democrat. "I will carefully review the Senate proposal released today and continue to engage with my colleagues and the White House on behalf of Hoosiers as the Senate works on tax reform.”

Donnelly has been under pressure from Pres. Trump and Pence to vote in favor of the Republican proposal. He has not been clear yet on how he intends to vote, but the Senate bill presents another option.

Donnelly said he met with several people in the Trump administration about tax reform, including White House Director of the National Economic Council Gary Cohn and White House Director of Legislative Affairs Marc Short.

Donnelly has discussed his desire to address outsourcing and ensure federal policies invest in American workers with President Trump and Administration officials on several occasions this year.

“I’m encouraged by the Senate’s proposal to create a tax code that is simpler, fairer, and allows hardworking Hoosiers to keep more of what they earn," said Young.

"I’m also glad that this proposal maintains the adoption tax credit that is important to so many Indiana families. As we continue to debate a final tax relief package, I will keep working to ensure Hoosier voices are heard," he said. Pence said from the podium at TKO Graphix Thursday that Younf could be counted on as a yes vote on Republican tax reform.
