Beech Grove Fire Kills Two-Year-Old Girl

The girl's father and three-year-old brother are in serious condition at an Indianapolis hospital.

BEECH GROVE, Ind. --  A fire this morning in Beech Grove killed a two-year-old girl and sent her brother and father to the hospital.

The fire began at about 10 a.m. inside an apartment on N. 6th Avenue.

The girl's father and three-year-old brother are in serious condition at an Indianapolis hospital.

The father tried to get the little girl outside but was driven back by intense smoke and heat, said Indianapolis Fire Department spokesperson Rita Reith.

"The father was desperately trying to get the little girl to come with him, and she would not or could not," said Reith. "The fire quickly grew out of control and he had to get out. He was able to make it out with the 3-year-old."

Several neighbors tried to help rescue the little girl, according to Reith.

"[They had] lots of help from the neighbors. Everybody was bringing over ladders [and making] phone calls to 911. Everybody made a serious effort. We had one civilian who entered the front door, tried to get in about three feet and was turned back by the intense smoke," Reith said.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
