Ben Davis Parents: We Need More Sidewalks

Parents are concerned for students, and other people, that have to walk alongside Girls School Road when traffic is busy.

INDIANAPOLIS -- They need more sidewalks.

Those are the words of people who live near Ben Davis High School.

Parents, like Jennifer Whitt, are concerned about kids and other people that are forced to walk alongside Girls School Road -- or even in the roadway -- during the day when traffic is busy.

“We have not proactively given students, seniors, and families a place to walk,” Whitt told WISH-TV. “There are some sidewalks within the neighborhoods themselves, but on our main thoroughfares, there are no sidewalks.”

Whitt says those that live in the Wayne Township School District need to do, and say, more, in order for something to happen.

“I think we have great representatives both on the city council and at the Statehouse who understand the need, but we as a community haven’t done much to support additional sidewalks and how we can support them and really figuring out what that traction looks like,” said Whitt.

The Indianapolis Department of Public Works agrees, saying Girls School Road and other parts of the west side are in need of sidewalk infrastructure.

However, they don’t have the funding. Not yet, at least.

The Department of Public Works says they are doing a study in the area by assessing needs and looking at costs and feasibility of future improvements. However, the results from the study won’t be available until mid-2020 to begin planning for construction.
