(INDIANAPOLIS) – Republican Senate candidate Mike Braun announced his support for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh as soon as the pick was announced. He says confirmation hearings have only reinforced his position.

Kavanaugh is a Washington, D.C., native, but Braun says he sees an appellate judge who reflects “everything Hoosiers are about.” He predicts Kavanaugh would be an independent thinker who will interpret the laws as written, not write new ones from the bench.

Democratic Senator Joe Donnelly, Braun’s opponent, has said he’s reviewing Kavanaugh’s past opinions and won’t decide how he’s voting until after the confirmation hearings. Braun calls Democrats’ challenges to Kavanaugh’s qualifications in those hearings “embarrassing.” He’s predicted Donnelly will vote to confirm, but maintains it’ll be a purely political vote.
