Buttigieg Returns to South Bend After Police Officer Shoots, Kills Suspect

The man's family says the officer shot their relative because he is black. Mayor Buttigieg calls it a tough situation.

UPDATE - June 17, 2019

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg changed his campaign schedule and returned to South Bend on Sunday night following a shooting involving a South Bend police officer.

Buttigieg said the circumstances around the shooting will be "thoroughly investigated" and called on any witnesses of the shooting to come forward and speak to investigators.

The St. Joseph Co. Prosecutor's Office says Eric Logan, of South Bend, was shot and killed early Sunday by an officer responding to a call about a person going through cars at an apartment complex.

The officer told investigators he started shooting after Logan got out of a car and approached him with a knife raised.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A police officer shot and killed a suspect in South Bend Sunday morning.

It happened along William Street when an officer was called to the area for a "suspicious person going through cars." Investigators say the officer was engaging with Logan when the officer told them Logan approached the officer and pulled out a knife. That's when the officer shot Logan, fatally wounding him.

"It's challenging right now because we don't have all the facts," said Mayor Pete Buttigieg, who took off from his presidential campaign to return and address the situation.

"What we know is someone lost his life this morning and there is a family who is grieving and wants answers," he added. "We know there is an officer who is coming to terms with having taken a life and we don't know all the circumstances around that, but we know there is a lot of hurt."

Logan's family is outraged at the incident, telling WSBT that they believe their relative was shot because he is black. South Bend police are withholding the name of the officer who shot Logan for now.
