Cass Co. Introduces Text to 911 Service

In an emergency, you can reach county dispatch with a text of up to 256 characters.

CASS COUNTY, Ind. -- In one Indiana county, you don't have to call 911 -- you can text, instead.

The Cass County Sheriff's Department says you can reach county dispatch with a text of up to 256 characters with no pictures or videos.

If the text message doesn't go through, the system will send a bounceback message.

The sheriff's department says that even with the new technology, calling is still the preferred way for you to reach 911.
