GREENWOOD, Ind. (WISH) — Center Grove Schools is working on plans to redistrict as a new elementary school is built, marking the fourth time Center Grove has redistricted since 2010.
The school district said it is using 22 portable classrooms, or trailers, for classes because enrollment has been increasing. The redistricting plan accounts for more growth in the future, but one parent told News 8 his family is not looking forward to the changes that will come with the plan.
“We’re concerned that change like this is really disruptive to our family,” said parent Derek Payne.
Payne has two children in elementary school and two more who will soon be in school. He moved to the area, in large part, so his kids could attend Center Grove Schools. Center Grove estimates nearly 2,000 new homes will be built in the area the district serves in the next 5-10 years.
Center Grove has five elementary schools and a sixth, Walnut Grove, currently under construction. It’s set to open this fall. The district has come up with two proposed boundary options. Payne isn’t happy with either option.
“We’re actually in the same situation on each one of them. We’re cut from the current school that they attend in all of those,” said Payne.
The first proposal would require 1,355 elementary and 141 middle school students to move. The second proposal would require 1,385 elementary and 151 middle school students to move.
“It doesn’t seem like the best approach. It seems like poor long-term planning,” said Payne.
The new elementary school is located in Bargersville on Morgantown Road and State Road 144.
A public meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday in the cafeteria of Center Grove High School.
