Clay Resigns as Council President, Vop Osili Elected

Clay threw in the towel before an almost certain ouster.

INDIANAPOLIS--Rev. Stephen Clay is no longer the Indianapolis City-County Council president. He resigned Monday, just before the meeting where he was expected to be booted.

Vop Osili, also a Democrat, was elected president.

Clay was expected to be ousted after a series of episodes both during and before his presidency. Democrats were angry because to be elected, Clay offered Republicans council chairmanships.

He also fired the council clerk and deputy clerk, and the board attorney. He then claimed that the fired employees had improperly gotten raises, but offered little evidence to support the claims.

Mayor Hogsett said he is looking forward to working with the new president and hopes Democrats and Republicans can come together to move the city forward.
