He is the 26th coach in franchise history, replacing Chuck Pagano, who was fired December 31 after missing the playoffs for the third straight year.

Indianapolis will be McDaniels' second foray as head coach. He led the Denver Broncos to an 11-17 record during the 2009-10 seasons. He spent the 2011 season as an offensive coordinator in St. Louis before returning to the Patriots.

McDaniels spent 15 seasons in New England and served nine years as the offensive coordinator for Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. He was part of all five of New England's Super Bowl titles since 2001.
