Downtown Transit Center construction delayed by archaeological finds

IndyGo: main building may open on time, unsure of rest of site

There might be a delay in the completion of part of IndyGo's new downtown transit center thanks to some archaeological findings at the construction site.

While construction on the main building for the $20 million transit center is going smoothly according to IndyGo president Mike Terry, some findings on the rest of the construction site at Washington and Delaware in downtown Indy have slowed crews down.  "We follow the National Environmental Protection Act and work with the state's historic preservation division, so there have been individuals sifting (through the dirt) looking for things of significance," Terry said.  He believes several buildings and possibly a hotel were previously on the site.  "It's probably the entirety of that block.  There hasn't been any construction there - it's pretty much been a leveled parking lot for years."

The Downtown Transit Center was scheduled to open this fall, and IndyGo had already sent advisories to riders whose bus routes might change.  While Terry believes the main building of the center will still open on schedule, he is unsure whether the area that will house bus bays will be ready by the fall - it all depends on the dig.  "The question is whether the facility can be utilized as far as our transfer points, but we will be advising the public as we get more information on that," said Terry.
