ATLANTA — At least 92 people in 29 states — including Indiana — have been infected with a strain of drug-resistant salmonella, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday.

No deaths have been reported, but 21 people have been hospitalized since the outbreak began in January.

The CDC says this specific strain of bacteria is resistant to several of the antibiotics used to treat the infection.

It has been found in live chickens and raw chicken products, but the CDC has yet to find a common supplier.

People sick with this strain of salmonella have experienced stomach pain, cramps, diarrhea and fever 12 to 72 hours after being exposed, the CDC said.

To avoid getting sick, the CDC suggests you should cook chicken thoroughly and wash your hands before and after you handle food.

The US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service is monitoring the outbreak, and the CDC’s investigation is ongoing.
