Dylan Tate Charged in Death of 1-Year-Old Harlan Haines

Harlan Haines died in February. Doctors found signs of physical abuse on his body and pieces of paper towel stuck in his throat.

ANDERSON, Ind. -- Charges against Dylan Tate in the death of 1-year-old Harlan Haines were amended Monday to murder and child molesting, according to the The Herald Bulletin.

Tate, 27, was previously charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death.

Court documents say Tate took Harlan, his girlfriend's child, to the emergency room at Community Hospital on Feb. 23.

Tate later told police he crashed his car on the way to the hospital and he and Harlan were picked up by a passing car.

Doctors at Community were able to revive Harlan, who had stopped breathing, and transferred him to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, where he died.

Court documents say Harlan's body had signs of physical abuse. Pieces of paper towel were also found stuck in the boy's throat. Neither Tate nor Harris could tell police how Harlan got injured.

If convicted, Tate could face up to 65 years for murder and up to 50 years for child molesting.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 16.

Prosecutors hope to try Tate and the boy's mother, Jennifer Harris, together.
