Elderly, Intoxicated Bus Driver Crashes Church Bus in Lake County

The 82-year-old driver is facing drunk driving charges after crashing the church bus he was driving on the Indiana Toll Road.

LAKE COUNTY, Ind. -- Police say an intoxicated driver crashed a church bus in northern Indiana.

Indiana State Police has arrested 82-year-old Wilton Carr of Gary in the case.

Carr faces preliminary charges of:

Operating while intoxicated (OWI) causing bodily injury – level 6 felony

- OWI with passengers under 18 years of age - level 6 Felony

- OWI - class C misdemeanor

- OWI endangerment - class A misdemeanor

Police say he was driving a "Jesus Saves Bus Ministry" bus on Monday night while returning from the United Center in Chicago. While headed eastbound on the I-80/90 Indiana Toll Road, police say he drove off the roadway, hit a dirt/gravel embankment, causing the front tires to leave the ground.

Several people were thrown from their seats.

Police say 47 people were on board. One adult and four children were taken to a local hospital.

The bus is owned by Jesus Saves Missionary Baptist Church in Gary.
