Former Reserve Officer Accused Of Stealing Gun, Money

Clinton Ellis is accused of taking $2,500 from the town of Laurel while he was an officer to do a drug investigation, but never used the money for its intended purpose.

LAUREL, Ind. — A former reserve officer in Franklin County faces charges after investigators say he stole money from the town and gave another officer a stolen gun as a gift.

Clinton Ellis, 34, is accused of taking $2,500 from the town of Laurel while he was an officer to do a drug investigation, but never used the money for its intended purpose.

Indiana State Police began investigating Ellis after the Laurel Town Marshal reached out to them about the stolen handgun. Detectives say Ellis seized the handgun during a search warrant in Nov. 2017 but never placed it into storage for evidence. Instead, investigators say Ellis gave the gun to another officer as a gift in December.

Ellis is in the Franklin County Jail charged with two counts of felony theft and one count of official misconduct.

He was fired from the Laurel Police Department in early February.
