BOSTON (WISH) — Thousands of people ran around Boston Monday for the 123rd Boston Marathon.

One of those runners was Andrew Peterson, a Special Olympics athlete from central Indiana.

Peterson is the second Special Olympics athlete ever to qualify for the race.

The first person qualified 35 years ago.

His goal was to finish the 26-mile run in less than 2 hours, 50 minutes. While he didn’t quite meet that, he’s still proud of his time of 3 hours, 43 minutes.

“I was just like, so, really proud of myself. Even I could have done better. I could have picked up my splits and stuff, so I could have had a better time,” Andrew Peterson said.

“It’s a big deal to qualify and he met that standard. Now he’s been here. Now he can only improve and get better,” said Andrew’s dad, Craig Peterson.

The winner of the men’s race completed the marathon in 2 hours, 7 minutes, and 57 seconds. The second place finisher was just two seconds behind him.

The winner of women’s race finished with a time of 2 hours, 23 minutes and 30 seconds.
