INDIANAPOLIS — With a 3.2 percent unemployment rate, Indiana is having a tough time finding enough people to fill the jobs in the state. Gerry Dick, with Inside Indiana Business, said it might be a good idea for younger people to look at the possibility of training for agriculture and manufacturing jobs.

“It’s making young people aware of these careers,” said Dick. “We’re talking about agriculture. The state’s seven point plan for the next ten years for agriculture, part of it is education.”

Dick said that if people can put old myths about manufacturing out of their minds, it might help in choosing a career path where you can make pretty good money.

“There are a lot of families who believe manufacturing is a dirty grimey, not a good job. Thinking back to the old days, with the greasy, loud, dirty factories. It’s not the case anymore,” said Dick. “It’s about high-tech, innovation, technology and those sorts of things. So, education is part of it.”

Dick said he believes people who have been in the old school manufacturing work force can also be assets.

“You talk about the people who have been pushed out of careers in the older line manufacturing. There are a lot of people out there who, with a different skill set, could slide into some of these newer economy jobs.”
